Everything Around Us and Curb 2 Curb Transport are teaming with USO Wiesbaden to bring a Merry Christmas to our area families this year.
Rodney Williams, owner of both companies, donated funds for the USO to purchase 100 evergreen trees that represent the holiday spirit. Of those trees, 75 will be distributed in early December to families at the Christmas Tree Extravaganza and the remaining 25 trees are donated for the USO Winterfest.
“I am a strong believer in giving back to the community,” Williams said. “As a child who grew up in the military community, and who lived overseas, I understand how important the small things are when living thousands of miles away from things that are familiar.”
For the past five years, the USO tradition of distributing Christmas trees brought the holiday spirit to life. Recipients of the Christmas Tree Extravaganza include service members with an E6 or below status who signed up at one of the USO locations on Hainerberg or Clay Kaserne. Participants receive a ticket that is exchanged for the tree on December 3rd at the USO Pavilion.
“There is nothing that promotes selflessness and giving more than the Christmas season, and that’s what the USO is all about,” said Haley Steidinger, Assistant to the Area Director of the USO Rhein Main Area. “The Christmas tree symbolizes home and togetherness, which helps service members connect to family, home and country, even from overseas.”
Christmas Tree Extravaganza sign-ups are underway. Pick-up is at the USO Cottage on Hainerberg from 3:00 – 7:00pm on December 3rd. Be ready to show your ID card once more, then peruse the selection of trees donated by Everything Around Us and Curb 2 Curb Transport while sipping on a cup of steaming hot kindspunsch or cocoa.
Aside from the donation of funds, it takes about eight individuals and nearly 50 volunteer hours to make the tree giveaway and Winterfest a success and joyful experience for our service members and families.
“The best thing about this event is watching service members walk away with their perfect Christmas tree, often chosen by the littlest members of the family,” Steidinger added. “To know that a little piece of our hard work will be placed at the center of their household on Christmas morning is the best feeling!”
Winterfest is a community event at the Hainerberg PX where our local agencies, programs and nonprofit organizations decorate the donated trees which are displayed along with Christmas market stands from noon to 4 pm on Saturday, December 14th.
Residents on base and in the Wiesbaden or Kaiserslautern area may recognize the Curb 2 Curb logo and red truck. Williams has been assisting our community members and the Wiesbaden Community Spouses’ Club, Inc. Thrift Shop for months – even being named the Thrift Shop Volunteer of the Month in June.
“It’s an honor to give back to the community with the USO and (Wiesbaden Community) Spouses Club,” Williams said. “I am grateful our companies can be apart of something that is important as this for the holidays.”
In addition to the Christmas Tree Giveaway, USO Wiesbaden also hosts various other events throughout the holiday season including Cookies & Cocoa with Santa and the Single Service Member Christmas Dinner, held at the Community Activity Center. The USO serves a delicious and traditional homemade meal, and also offers giveaways raffled off to those service members who are unaccompanied for the holidays. Gifts range from large-screen TV’s to Bluetooth speakers, to recreational yard games and we always have a great time.
